Weeders

For effective SRI practice, regular weeding is required at regular intervals during the rice-growing cycle. A mechanical weeder is the ideal tool for doing this as it reduces the manual labour and also means that the soil is aerated and the weeds buried into the soil to increase fertilisation.

This is the only input that the optimum SRI practice needs and farmers and researchers have worked together in many areas to develop weeders that are right for local conditions. Research is also being done into the ideal ergonomics for women.

The SRI-Rice Center at Cornell University has many articles on the advantages of weeders and the different tools that have been developed.
